Backups

In attempting to close AMNO I am currently getting an error message: "Cannot save tree storage file as..................contains an incorrect path".

I suspect the problem lies with the fact that I changed the selected storage folder during use and deleted the old folder - not now recoverable following a system clean-up emptied the recycle bin! I wish to save the current data which remains somewhere when acknowledging the error and closing the program. Deleting all previous backups and a new location is possible but I need to remove the error message. Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Backups

I believe everything is totally OK with your data file.

This error displayed when AllMyNotes cannot create a backup of your data file. It says, "incorrect path". Likely you've deleted the folder where backups where created in the past. To fix it just go to Tools -> Options -> Tools -> Backup, and make sure to select correct folder where to place your backups in the future.

Re: Backups

Thanks but I fear that doesn't work. Certainly the original folder has been deleted and unrecoverable, it was on the same drive and tree that the current backup folder is now but not deleted until the new folder was established in settings etc.. I also tried opening a different backup in that folder but when closing it I still get an error message which prevents it! Creating a new backup folder in the same My Docs folder does not work .

Is it possible that using a portable version on the PC where the main version is installed could create a problem? The two programs and backups are on different drives of course so I did not expect a problem, and the portable version closes OK.

Re: Backups

Did you tried to select "Custom location"? I believe it should fix the problem if you'll select already existing folder.

Re: Backups

Yes, I have always used custom location i.e. Drive F/My Documents/ however, the program installs the backup folder in C/Users/User Name/My Docs. - which is not the same My documents folder on F drive. I have tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling with no difference. Folders on C/Users can be deleted in Win7 Safe Mode but re appear upon re-boot.

I have not had this problem with earlier versions of AMNO and the only solution I have remaining is to reluctantly live with where it decides to reside or re-install the earlier version of the program. I will next check where an earlier version locates the folder when installed on my PC also check where the latest version installs the folder on a laptop. Maybe you can advise where the backup folder is intended to reside?

Re: Backups

Try to locate and delete file(s) named allmynotes.ini, it will reset all your settings to default state (it will not hurt your data), and hopefully all will work just as before after you'll select custom backup location (this time it should work, I believe).

Re: Backups

Hello Vlad. Thank you, Thank you. It worked the first attempt but then after opening and closing a couple of times it reverted to 'error' Deleted the .ini file again and all seems to now work well (fingers crossed). I was beginning to despair but am delighted to get it back again.

On a different note, User Suggestion: Family history/ genealogy data scoured from various official Internet sites.

The real reason of the issue is not in allmynotes.ini itself, but in file access permissions. From some reason on some machines (yet we didn't figured out exact reasons as it happens rarely) the OS denies file writing access to the majority of users. If the issue will ever happen again there is a better solution - grant full access for Everyone user to files allmynotes.ini.

Re: Backups

Right, I fear that I have one of those machines for the PC is now booting with the error warning on display. The only way to clear it is by opening the program, waiting for another error message to appear and to OK that then both errors and program close. After that it all works normally until the next boot time. The problem only started after a Win7 and AMNO re-install. I also suspect that attempting to use mobile AMNO on a flash drive - with its db on the drive may be connected? I still cannot relocate the backup folder from where the program re-install locates it in C/Users directory.

Re: Backups

Sorry to say that does not work either! Whatever I do the error occurs and is saving nothing. I have tried un-installing amno and re-installing. I have tried reverting to the directory where the program initially installs the backup folder, Giving permission to everyone, all unsuccessful. Perhaps solely using a mobile version and wiping all backups and program from PC and laptop will eliminate the errors?

This forum is moderated, it takes time for us to sort out real messages and send spam messages to hell.

Please locate and send me your allmynotes.log file for details on this issue to User Image. I believe it will contain the reason why this error is happening to you.

Re: Backups

Thank you. As I can see, your full file path+name is: "F:\My Documents\AMNO BACKUPS 12.3.18\AllMyNotes Documents.ddb - backup 16-02-28 .ddb - backup 16-03-01.ddb - backup 16-04-18.ddb - backup 16-07-16 .ddb - backup 16-11-08 JAN21.ddb - backup 17-07-07 .ddb - backup 18-02-27.ddb - backup 18-03-13.ddb"

Whole file path+name length is 255 characters. Windows has a limitation on file path+name length - MAXIMUM 255 characters! Aside that so long name and location is unusual and has no sense, a backup of it simply cannot be created as there is no way to add a single character to it.

So the solution would be very simple. Use menu item File -> Save As... and rename the file to simply "AllMyNotes Documents.ddb", also make sure to change the directory to "F:\My Documents\", please do not store main data file and its backups in the same folder. It's even highly recommended to store backups on different drives (if only possible), to survive hard disk failures.

P.S. I do not know why your data file name got so long and messy, possible it's somehow related to the fact that it's stored in the folder where only backups are supposed to be. Let me know if the issue will come back again, we'll investigate it.

Re: Backups

Vlad, Thanks for the prompt reply. I should also thank you for shining a light where there was none! On the very first set-up and use, clicking 'save' does not ask for a location as in most other programs, but auto stores in the backup folder. It has never occurred to me to use 'save as' to set up and command where data should be saved! I will now rename and relocate the data folder and move the Backup folder to an external hard drive. That may take me a while but I will post the result either way. Regards, Ron

Re: Backups

The standard Save As dialog is system's dialog displayed by Windows, there must be an Up button to to the parent folder.

Either way there is an alternative way to move data file - use File Explorer to move .ddb data file, rename it, and simply double-click on it to open it in AllMyNotes. As simple as that. You can even create desktop shortcut to that file to open it directly.

Re: Backups

Well, I moved the Backups folder to G drive (External hard drive) - Created a .ddb folder on F drive (PC hard drive partition) where the backup folder moved from and saved the current .ddb file to it. Closed down the program, rebooted the PC and opened the program again with the last saved file, All OK. Closed the program and received another error; 'cannot.........etc'. Closing the error closes it and the program. Tried deleting the .ini file again and resetting everything - no different, still the error message on trying to close the program. Since closing the error to close the program I decided to live with it as not too much a problem, However, I am now getting the error message popping up on screen even when the program is closed and not just minimized which will only go if I open the program and close it with yet another error?

Looking in the .ddb file folder, and the Backups folder I am seeing .ddb files dating back to Feb 2016. The option to remove Backups older than ** does not appear to do so. I am now considering un-installing AMNO with 'Revo Uninstaller' which seeks out ALL traces and then re-installing the program again with the file and backup folders sited as above. Hopefully this will eliminate all problem old files. My only need is to save the current data to start with again. If I use 'Save As' to save it on a flash drive, will that save just the current data or include earlier .ddb files and if so can I delete the older ones in some way?

Since you have said a few of these problems are rare and consider them likely to do with the PC rather than the program I am wondering if this is the case here. I have been having difficulties with Windows 7 updates which caused me to re-install Widows before the problems with AMNO. The latest updates started closing down the PC and re-starting in Safe Mode (the option for safe mode was unchecked when examined) Restoring to a time before Updates solved the problem and I am now forced to eliminate Windows update!. If you think this may have some bearing on the problems with AMNO now, please advise and I will use mobile AMNO on a flashdrive or a laptop and no longer take your time and trouble to sort it, thanks again.

Re: Backups

Finally I hope! Problem resolved. Following a second attempt at moving, renaming files and folders all seems to now work as required. Many thanks for your time and care to sort it.
