I'm pretty sure how it works, just want to be sure of something before I toss my .ddb into the Dropbox folder.

Dropbox's binary diff should work on .ddb files, even if part, or all of the file is password protected, right? I don't see why it shouldn't since I doubt it would need access to the contents of the file. Just curious because I have a data cap on my internet and want to make sure I'm not uploading several MB every time I make a change.

Right, it works. I'm not sure if it compares on binary level, or by last modification date, but it works very well. Every time the file is modified on your PC it's being uploaded to Dropbox automatically.

AllMyNotes saves data changes frequently to avoid accidental data loss... And Dropbox detects and uploads it immediately.

If you want to save traffic then you have to put Dropbox on Pause, and then resume it once you want to leave the PC.

According to this explanation Dropbox uses a binary diff rather than just a timestamp.

I'll have to test it out and see if I can monitor how much data Dropbox transfers each time a change is saved in AllMyNotes. I'll post my results when I get around to trying it tomorrow, after some sleep.

By the way, it's a very nice feature that AllMyNotes saves so often!

Okay, so I tested it out as best I could.

Only the changed parts of the .ddb seem to be uploaded. By that I mean that if you make changes to only one note, the entire file isn't uploaded. The one minor thing I noticed that I'll have to watch for is that when I note is modified, everything in that note seems to be uploaded again not just the changed parts.

I tested this by adding an image to a note and monitoring the amount of data sent by Dropbox. The amount of data sent was a little less than the increase in .ddb size, I think because Dropbox compresses the data before sending. I then changed other notes that contained only text, and the data sent was extremely small. When I added text to the note with the image in it, the data sent was about the same as when I added the entire image.

This should work quite well for me, since I rarely include images, or anything more than text in AllMyNotes.

I hope this helps anyone else that is curious about how this all works together.

Thank you for investigating this. And it's great that Dropbox is that smart. This is good news indeed. Even better then I was expecting, because I was thinking that whole file is sent.
